CNN International: The tiny island paradise where ‘people breathe music’

‘There’s an old saying which states the Cape Verde Islands are home to a greater number of musicians per square kilometer than any other country in the world. In truth, such a definitive claim may be nigh on impossible to prove. But there is a certain factual accuracy behind the legend: the important and proud relationship the Atlantic island country of just 500,000 people has with music.

…few countries have the same natural resources for music as Cape Verde.’

Cape Verde – diamond in the rough

by Villa St. Aubyn on January 19, 2015 No comments

I sail the world since 2011 and I find Cape Verde a stunning place. Mainstream tourism has found its way there, but did not manage to excavate this diamond in the rough. Most tourism is last minute and all inclusive holidays to the islands Sal and Boa Vista where thousands enjoy the beaches and weather. I personally didn´t fly to Cape Verde but sailed there. What should have been a one week visit turned into a year and a half as the islands intrigued me and I set out to discover them.

Cape Verde: West Africa’s last outpost

‘This is also a tacit admission that accommodation is still relatively scarce – although I uncover a gem in Villa St Aubyn. A boutique retreat of three storeys and four bedrooms, it hides five blocks from the water; elegant yet cosy. Here, on its sun terrace, loungers call for indolence but the glory of the panorama, over rooftops and pastel walls insists that you go out and explore’.

What better way is there to escape the stresses and strains of everyday life?’.

TAP Portugal’s recommendations for Cape Verde

by Villa St. Aubyn on September 18, 2014 No comments

Villa St. Aubyn… ’a boutique hotel with several options and rates to match. At the top of the building, youll find the hotels best-kept secret: the terrace where breakfast is served every morning. From there you can see Monte Cara, the island of Santo Antão, a glimpse of the sea and the colonial houses with their bold colours. Going up a small flight of steps youll find a piece of paradise: the warm jacuzzi for taking a refreshing dip at the end of the day.’.

Cosmo in Cape Verde

‘Once we arrived on Sao Vicente, we stayed in the capital Mindelo – a port city, considered Cape Verde’s ‘Cultural Capital’. Our home for the trip was the beautiful Villa St Aubyn, a stunning colonial-style building set across three floors. On the top floor we found the roof terrace – complete with a dining and lounge area, hot tub and beautiful views across the city’.

Cabo Verde among National Geographic’s 2014 must-see places

by Villa St. Aubyn on September 18, 2014 No comments

‘It still feels like an uncharted hideaway, where tourism is nascent and blissfully small scale. That elusive feeling of discovery awaits on the more far-out islands, reachable only by boat, like the tiny flyspeck of Brava and the vertical Santo Antão with its lush valleys, pine ridges, and stark canyons…’
